Rather than leave the castle altogether, Frankie and Dex get as far away from the two elder statesmen as possible. They then continue their reconnaissance of the castle, listening in on every conversation. They even listen to people talking to themselves, something that happens more often than is commonly believed.

The one thing they know from this is that the workforce is not happy. Not even remotely.

Three more hours of skulking and they’re privy to all the castle gossip, along with the challenges of the day-to-day running of the place.

They’ve learned more than they expected. It’s a shame then that none of it is of any use to Zane. To a man and woman, everyone in the castle genuinely believes Zane must be guilty as charged.

Well, not quite.

Cassandra is the one Nautilus to speak in Zane’s defense, and most vehemently at that. No surprise, really. Frankie suspects this is two-fold.

The mermaid is responsible for the demise of her step-relatives and, more importantly, she’s got the hots for Zane. Throwing Zane into the Well of Sirens won’t help in her quest to marry him.

Another hour sees them footsore and weary, and no closer to finding the real murderer. “Come on, Dex. This is a bust. Let’s go back to the Pearl and think about this.” She’s about to wave her wand when she catches a snippet of conversation and her hand stills.

Voices come from behind a nearby decorative velvet panel. She shuffles closer and when she’s right next to it, she realizes it conceals a room.

“The trial is set for the morning? Mother, that’s so soon.”

The evil duo themselves!

“I want him gone by sunset, tomorrow. I will not have my authority to rule questioned by him, or anyone.”

Cassandra responds with a choked sob, one that’s quickly muffled.

Frankie edges her wand through the gap between the wall and the panel and twitches the wall-hanging to the side. She can see a slice of the room beyond. Cassandra sits slumped on a marble bench against one wall, her head in her hands, her body shaking uncontrollably.

The young mermaid isn’t getting an ounce of sympathy from Ursula. If anything, the woman looks supremely annoyed at her daughter’s show of emotion. Perhaps the queen totally lacks in this department herself?

Frankie’s curiosity gets to her, and she edges the panel further open. The view through the floor-to-ceiling windows that make up one wall of the chamber is dominated by the Well of Sirens. It’s like a corporate box at a football stadium.

This isn’t all Frankie can see. “Dex, what are you doing in there? Get back here.” Sheesh, she takes her eyes off him for two seconds.

It doesn’t matter that Frankie’s words are muted, courtesy of the protective ward. Ursula swings around, searching frantically. Her paranoia rubs off on her daughter, and Cassandra’s eyes dart around the space erratically. “What, mother? What is it?” gasps out Cassandra between sobs.

“I thought I heard something. I thought it was Kostas again.”

“Again?” Cassandra’s expression is one of shock, the blood draining from her face as though a plug has been pulled.
